Celebrate International Scratch Day at Ithaca Generator:

May, 17 – 2 to 4 pm.

At 2pm we will have a tutorial on making music with Scratch:

Making Music with Scratch
Brendan Vavra of Family Math will teach students how to use Scratch’s
sound blocks to create interactive music. This course introduces MIDI
(Musical Instrument Digital Interface): what it is, how it works, and
how to use it in Scratch to make music. Students will also learn how
to combine sound blocks with event blocks to create virtual musical
instruments. Prior knowledge of music and/or Scratch is recommended,
but not required. (If you need a more basic introduction to Scratch,
we can provide that as well.) Please register if you would like to
attend the tutorial. If possible, bring your laptop with Scratch
installed. We’ll have computers available for those who don’t have
their own. Free Registration:

From 3-4 we will have demos of Scratch projects. No need to register
for demos, just come!

We’ll have some light snacks and look at some nifty Scratch creations,
including a small Scratch-driven robot vehicle! If you have a Scratch
project to show off, please bring it along! Contact jenn at if you have any questions!

Looking for more Family Math?

Family Math will be hosting five Math Summer Camps this summer of 2014
for elementary school children entering grades 2-6 in the Ithaca area.
The camps focus on breaking the myth that math is only about numbers
by engaging students with mathematics through music, art, puzzles and
more. The workshops are led by inspiring, trained mentors who help
foster natural curiosity for problem solving, making math more fun and
intriguing for both students who embrace mathematics and those who
have been turned off by it. The dates for the Math Camps are: July
7th-11th at Fall Creek; July 14th-18th and July 21st-25th at Cayuga
Heights; and August 4th – August 8th at Belle Sherman; and all camps
run from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Campers bring their own lunch.  The cost
is $150 per child per week with scholarships available.  To sign up,
